My Bio

I have Endometriosis, as well as severe eczema, a rare eye condition and a blood disorder. I'm 33 with no children. I'm one of the more unfortunate ladies whose pain occurs throughout the month, and not just during periods. I was finally diagnosed with Endometriosis in 2006 after suffering from the age of 16. Initially I was given Marvelon, which made me ill & I was finally referred to gyn when I was 24 & misdiagnosed and treated for PCOS. No further investigations were undertaken as I was a virgin and told "young to have anything wrong"... I firmly believe that being given the combined Pill worsened the situation. Since being diagnosed, I've been through 2 excision surgeries. I've also used the Mirena IUS and been through Zoladex treatment (without HRT). I have researched conventional and complementary therapies in detail and used prescribed progesterone cream, before turning to pine bark extract. Without the superb support of the SHE Trust and Dian Mills, my nutritional therapist, I would be unable to get out of bed at all due to pain and would be unable to have any sort of worthwhile life. I am also indebted to my friends from the Endoboard who are always there for me. Thanks to them and the régime I have been on for the past nine months, I have gone from chewing the duvet in agony, collapsing, unable to function without regular doses of opioid-based drugs, which only make me too sleepy to do anything, to retraining in integrative medicine. I want to be able to help others live full lives and not be held back my their illnesses. I am a member of Endometriosis UK and Endometriosis SHE Trust as well as a professional member of the BCMA and British Holistic Medical Association.

  1. Natural progesterone cream

    09/13/09 03:31:46 | 0 Comments

    Hi there,

There have been several mentions of progesterone cream, so I thought it worthwhile to make comment on my own experience of it here.

I used a natural progesterone cream after consulting a retired doctor who prescribed it for me. It's important to take guidance with this, because putting additional hormones into the body can bring about changes. Any hormones you use will require additional nutrients to use them up.

Please note that the progesterone cream...
  2. Eeek! Misguided enthusiasm for "curing"!

    08/27/09 09:04:49 | 1 Comments

    Hi there,

You know, I've realised that I don't expect doctors to be able to cure me, and I know the importance of being well informed and looking after myself as well as possible to manage this chronic condition and the other conditions I deal with daily.
Now I'm faced with the misguided enthusiasm of a young and supposedly well-meaning friend who sees my incurable illness as an intellectual challenge.

What do you say to those who are convinced they can find...
  3. People's perceptions of pain control & those who judge us

    08/12/09 02:26:13 | 0 Comments

    Hi there,

Has anyone encountered people around them being critical of you having to use painkillers regularly for your pain?
How do you find others' perceptions of what you have to take?
Do you feel you have to justify yourself to them constantly? Do you encounter any nastiness and accusations that you are irresponsible?

It can be difficult at times if we lack privacy and find out space invaded by others who lack understanding.
I would love to hear from...
  4. What made you choose your user name?

Puddleduck was the nickname given to me by an aunt when I was about 3 or 4. Of course, the original Puddleduck was Beatrix Potter's.
As it happens, the Beatrix Potter character's story takes on added significance for me: as you probably know, Jemima met a handsome, foxy gentleman but he wasn't exactly what he seemed, and all she wanted to do was settle down and allow her eggs to hatch...

There's a definite parallel between her story and mine, but of course, my...

You may be interested to know that the government not only plans to put all NHS records on a national database, but it also plans to make these records publicly available to pharmacists.

  6. Update: Homeopathic hospital appointment

    11/25/08 23:22:00 | 0 Comments

    Hi there,

Well, after seeing the dermatologist last week for the widespread, severe eczema and being frightened by his decision to put me on Cyclosporin immediately
(with all the infection risk from immunosuppression thrown in, and other risks), I decided to hang fire with taking the stuff until I'd been seen at the
    Homeopathic Hospital today.

My appointment lasted an hour and a quarter, my entire medical history was discussed and I...
  7. Anyone else been treated with Cyclosporin (immunosuppressant)?

    11/18/08 06:51:09 | 0 Comments

    Hi there,

I'm back from my long-awaited appointment with the dermatologist.
Due to the severity of my eczema, he wants to start me on Cyclosporin, an immunosuppressant drug, immediately, as he says I need a break from the relentless assault on my immune system so I can get some sleep and rest from the itch, burn and inflammation and feel more normal.

    It's neither a cure nor a long-term option.

Has anyone else been treated with this drug? How were your...
  8. Query: why would a period stop half way then restart?

    09/15/08 05:46:00 | 1 Comments

    Hi there,

Here's something which puzzles me, and I wonder if it happens to other ladies.
For quite a few years now I have two days of heavy bleeding in my period, then no blood comes out for 12 hours or more, before it restarts and continues for several more days.
I wonder: is there part of my womb where the womb lining cannot thicken or build up, and does this explain the stoppage in bleeding for a while, or does it mean that the blood is going elsewhere or staying put...
  9. New telomerase research and link to endo: a question

    09/02/08 23:22:54 | 0 Comments

    Hi there,

Many of you will have come across new articles recently in the Telegraph, Daily Mail and BBC, in which they reported that scientists had "unlocked" the key to endometriosis: in a study of fertile women they found that telomeres were overproduced later in the menstrual cycle, making it harder to support a pregnancy, whereas in women without the condition, telomeres are only produced at the beginning of the cycle and then production stops.

    What I wonder is...
  10. Update: perseverance has paid dividends

    08/10/08 08:17:54 | 0 Comments

    Hi there,

The past few months have been tough: being a self-employed teacher/translator and dealing with multiple chronic conditions and Zoladex (which I had to stop in February), and having no sick pay, struggling on. I very nearly lost my translation work because the side effects of Zoladex caused me to lose my short term memory and my concentration dwindled, not least because I did not sleep a wink from the time I began the injections. Coming off the drug was a nightmare....
